“A Word about Tyre Rubber”
Much of the rubber for equestrian surfaces is shredded from waste tyres and whilst this is a worthy means of recycling a problem waste it does pose some concerns for the equestrian community. The majority of scrap tyres are now radial and each one contains upwards of 2.5lbs of steel reinforcement. Whilst most reputable recyclers will have invested in magnetic separators to remove as much of the wire as possible, these inevitably need regular maintenance and cleaning and few can or will guarantee 100% metal free material at the end of the process.
 Beware of those offering “cheap” tyre shred, if they have cut corners on their separation routines you may end up with steel shards in your surface a danger to both horse and rider! We know of at least one arena owner who has had to have tyre rubber removed at considerable cost for just this reason.
